Under the Red, White and Blue
The title of this poster – Under the Red, White and Blue – is a double tribute. First, it is a tribute to the American flag whose colors waved over Utah Beach and Omaha Beach in the early hours of June 6, 1944. It is also a tribute to the American writer F.Scott Fitzgerald who wanted to give the title Under the Red, White, and Blue to his novel The Great Gatsby, now considered to be the great American novel and the great novel about America.
F. Scott Fitzgerald, like John Dos Passos and other writers, was fully aware of the decisive changes taking place in interwar America. From the Jazz Age to the Normandy landings, beyond the ups and downs, social transformations, and political turmoil, one of the most crucial periods of American history was coming into existence – the starting point of the “American Century” to use Henry Luce’s term from 1941. Hence the subhead of the exhibition that will be inaugurated in Caen, Normandy on May 7, 2024: 1919-1944, the Dawn of the American Century.
